The Auditor General has chastised management of the Koforidua Technical University in the Eastern Region for employing a fake lecturer for nine (9) years.

The University, according to the 2015 Auditor General's report, employed one Richmond Kweku Frempong who presented fake certificates, and rose through the ranks to become the Dean of the Faculty of Business and Management.

Mr. Frempong, who was engaged in 2006 according to the report, received a total salary of GHc201, 065.92 within the period.

Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee at Ho in the Volta Region today [Monday] May 7, 2018, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Mrs Smile Dzisi, said the case of the dismissed lecturer who is on the run has been referred to Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO) for action.

“What happens is that when we employ you as a lecturer…you have to publish some number of papers and contribute to the development of the university before the promotion. So as at the time of promotion to senior lecturer, I think the authorities at that time didn't go back to his employment as a lecturer. I think it was an oversight.”

“But when we started to put things in place and actually go through all his certificates, we identified the issue. And since then, it has become a policy that before you get employed in the institution, we'd have to duly verify your certificates.”

She said the institution has tightened its employment processes due to the issue.

“It's a big lesson the institution has learnt and we are putting measures in place to avoid this blunder.”
