Good Morals Acquired From The University Should Be Put Into Practice

Dr Mohsen Maarefi, the President of the Islamic University College Ghana (IUCG), has called on graduates to practice the good morals acquired at the College and endeavour to render services to communities that needed them the most.

He said this during the joint celebration of the 14th Graduation and 19th Matriculation ceremony of the College to confer degrees on students and welcome the newly admitted ones.

Speaking on the theme: 'The Tertiary Education Landscape: Opportunities and Challenges for the Ghanaian Muslim Community,' Dr Maarefi underscored the importance of education, adding; 'Today, the importance of higher education cannot be overemphasised.'

'Almost all social scientists have agreed that human capital can move the development engine of any nation much faster than physical capital.'

He said two ways through which tertiary education could play a vital role in the development of the nation were to improve research and productivity through tertiary education.

'By increasing productivity and efficiency, we can benefit more from our scarce resources and by improving research and development, we can ensure that resources are deployed in the best direction of development in accordance with the condition of the country,' he said.

Dr Maarefi urged the matriculating students to take their studies seriously, especially in the four years they would spend at the school, and appealed to the graduates to apply the knowledge acquired in the field of work.

Dr Gamel Nasser Adam, the Vice President in charge of Academic Affairs at the University College, assured the matriculating students of the College's readiness to provide the needed support to enable them to undertake their studies effectively.

He said the College was working on the accreditation process to commence two Masters programmes that include; Master of Arts (MA) in Comparative Law (Islamic Jurisprudence and Secular Law) and MA in Islamic Banking and Finance.

Some students who distinguished themselves academically were presented with special awards.

Siisu Oldman Mohammed received the Best Taxation Student Award; Ruhaina Issah, Best Business Administration Student; Sama-Madjaladjo Aziz Mohammed, Best Religious Studies Student; while Madam Millicent Gyimah Boateng won the Overall Best Student Award.

Dignitaries present at the Ceremony included Dr Nosratollah Maleki, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Members of Academia, Members of Parliament, the Diplomatic Corps, Islamic scholars, chiefs, parents and guardians.
