The President of the Medical Superintendents Association of Ghana, Doctor Joseph Campbell as well as other health service providers are lamenting over monies owed them by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) for services rendered in relation to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Doctor Joseph, speaking on the Ekosii Sen program today, disclosed the health scheme owes service providers 13 months of unpaid money for the services they rendered during that period of time.

The period which runs from 2016 when the National Democratic Congress (NDC), were in Government through 2017 and now into 2018. He explained service providers were not paid for four months in 2016 as well as six months in the year 2017. Talking about this year, he revealed they have not received any payment from January to this month April.

He however confirmed that the current Nana Addo administration has been able to clear seven to eight months of debts left by the former government. The debt which in monetary terms amounts to a total of 1 billion Ghana cedis out of 1.2 million Ghana cedis.

The president of the Medical Superintendent Association of Ghana continued, getting people from the national level to talk is a big challenge and it makes it difficult for them to get their grievances heard.

He pleaded, “Government should look at the bigger picture and do something about the situation as they are the biggest stakeholders taking the scheme into consideration.

Moving on, he confessed that is why currently even if you go to hospital and you are registered with the NHIS, some money is taken from you to help the service providers.
