Akropong - Akuapem, Feb. 29, GNA-- The Akuapem North District Assembly is to undertake three pilot biogas projects at Apirede, Akropong and Amanokrom in a bid to solve waste disposal problems in the district.
The success of the project would enable the assembly to decide on the conversion of household and public toilets as well as constructing a major biogas for the district at Kwamoso, near Mamfe.
The district chief executive, Mr Anthony Gyampoh, who announced this when addressing the third ordinary meeting of the assembly at Akropong-Akuapem on Monday said consultants would soon come out with details of the projects.
He said under the Village Infrastructure Project (VIP),markets at Awukugua, Apirede, Mangoase and Mampong as well as the Okorase-Domeabra road and a food processing plant at Nana Benyi have been selected for attention this year.
Mr Gyampoh urged the 15 communities selected to benefit from a DANIDA assisted water project to do well to open accounts with 300,000 cedis deposits each as directed.
He said only two communities have so far done so. Mr Gyampoh deplored the poor Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results recorded by schools in the district last year saying most schools had aggregates 21 and 30 while three schools at Amahi, Dawu and Sanfo Amo had 100 per cent failures.
He commended five schools which had 100 percent passes and called on heads of all schools to step up their supervisory roles to raise the standard of their schools.
On the forthcoming general elections, he called on the assembly members to educate the people to conduct themselves well to ensure that the electioneering campaigns are devoid of conflicts.
Earlier, the assembly elected Mr Geofrey Oteng-Arthur, assemblyman for Abonse as the new presiding member to succeed Nana Preko Ayisi Addo, the third, who died in December 1998.
