A student of the University of Ghana who got caught up in clashes between residents of his hall and rivals at Katanga hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is to undergo counseling.

The Student Representative Council (SRC), President of UG, Daniel Otting Awuah, made this known to Joy News on the AM Show Wednesday.

“The SRC is trying to link him to the counseling center so he can be relieved from some trauma,” he stated.

The clash between the students was sparked after a video of the Commonwealth hall resident being tortured by the ‘Katangees’ went viral.

The students from KNUST were on UG campus to participate in an intellectual interuniversity debate but an age-old rivalry between the two all-male halls sparked violence.

The purpose of the debate was to raise the standards of the rivalry from rowdiness to an intellectual activity to benefit society, Mr. Otting Awuah said.

He reveals that the clash marred the debate so the KNUST students have been sent back to their campus.

The SRC President also says the SRC and the university are still waiting on the official police report to take their next line of action.

“As it stands now, we are waiting for the police report before we take any next step,” he said.

Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, ASP Afia Tenge, confirmed to Joy News Tuesday, that the university is collaborating with the police to investigate the matters.

The police have also asked any student with information that can help with investigations to volunteer such information to the police.

Calm has since returned to the University of Ghana campus.
