A mason, who was arrested with 136 wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, has been remanded into custody by an Accra Circuit Court.

The accused, Stephen Kwadzo Baidoo, 31, was arrested by a prison officer at the senior correctional centre at Roman Ridge in Accra.

His suspicious behaviour gave him out and when the officer signaled him to stop and alight from the bicycle, he abandoned it and took to his heels.

He was chased by the officer and upon his arrest, a search conducted revealed 136 wrappers of dried leaves.

Stephen was arraigned before court on the charge of possessing narcotics without lawful authority to which he pleaded not guilty.

He was remanded into custody by the court, presided by Mr Aboagye Tandoh, to reappear on April 30 2018.

Police Prosecutor, Chief Inspector Kwabena Adu told the court that the complainant is Bio Abassis, an Assistant Superintendent of Ghana Prison Service, who works at the senior correctional centre at Roman Ridge in Accra.

He said on April 10, 2018 at about 10 am, the officer on duty at the correctional centre spotted the accused riding a bicycle.

“The officer chased the accused and arrested him. A search conducted revealed 136 wrappers of a substance suspected to be Indian Hemp in the bag,” Chief Inspector Adu told the court.

He said Stephen Kwadzo Baidoo, together with the substances, were handed over to the Airport Police for investigations.

He added that the accused, during interrogation, told the police that the substance was given to him by a certain man to sell but could not lead the police to him.
