A five-day trainer-of-trainers workshop on business start-up and growing the business has ended in Accra, with the aim of improving the skills and capacities of entrepreneurs and business operators to deliver better services to their clients and the public.

Addressing participants at the closing ceremony of the programme in Accra, on Friday, Mr Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, said everywhere in the world, the private sector had been playing the leading role in employing young people because it had the prospect of employing about 85 percent of the workforce.

He said, it had therefore become imperative as a nation, to strategise and explore the opportunities in the informal and the private sector to solve the youth unemployment challenge and called for a paradigm shift in training people in management, and rather focus on improving the productivity level of the workforce.

He said businesses would move faster when operators paid more attention to improving productivity of the people.''We always hear training for managers and trained people in management, but hardly do we train people in productivity, 'Mr Baffour-Awuah observed.

The Minister, therefore, stressed the need to re-shape the private sector to become the engine of growth for the nation.''Let us go and be the engine of change in our communities so that we can move the nation forward.

''As the Minister of Employment, I feel so sad when I see young people not working because these are people who are within their productive ages, and are supposed to use their energies to work so that we can deliver and transform the economy of this country for the better,'' he said.

The beneficiaries are expected to train and mentor operators of small-and-medium scale enterprises to improve their productivity and profitability.

Mr Baffour-Awuah said the training was one of the two training programmes outlined to improve their skills and capacities offer better services to the public.

Dr Theophilus Adomako, a Senior Facilitator at the Management Development Productivity Institute, one of the resource persons for the training programme, said the training covered 21 courses and that beneficiaries were expected to train operators of small-and-medium scale enterprises to improve their competencies.

He urged the beneficiaries to form networks, demonstrate professionalism and put whatever they had learnt into practice so that the nation would ultimately benefit.

Mr Thomas Kankam Adjei, the Course Prefect, said the training programme had equipped them with the requisite skills and knowledge to also train others to enhance their productivity.

The training was organised by the Private Enterprise Federation in collaboration with the Management Development Productivity Institute.

It was funded by the African Development Bank, drawing participants from the Association of Ghana Industries, Ghana Chamber of Commerce, Association of Building and Civil Contractors of Ghana and Ghana Gas and Fuel Operators of Ghana.

It formed part of the Ghana Institutional Support Programme, which treated topics such as information communication technology and e-commerce, leadership and change of mind-set and preparing a business plan, as well as accounting and cash-flow and employee recruitment, training and motivation.

The 30 participants were presented with certificates after the course.
