The Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam Member of Parliament (MP) has described the arrest of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Deputy General as a ploy to divert attention from the economic hardship in the country.

Cassiel Ato Forson said the continued detention of Koku Anyidoho more than 24 hours after his arrest, is self-evident that the police are being remote-controlled.

Speaking to Raymond Acquah on Upfront on the JOYNEWS channel on MultiTV Wednesday, he said the arrest is clearly "an order from above."

“I strongly believe that the way they are handling Koku is order from above. Somebody is instructing the police and the investigating authority to do this,” he categorically said.

“Please I don’t believe it”, he said in response to the comment that the police were following due process.

He added that the arrest is just a ploy to divert the attention of the citizenry from the issues going on in the country.

“…the hardships, the situation relating to the US agreement…and the government wants to use Koku as a scapegoat to cover it, but it will not wash,” he said.

Koku Anyidoho was picked up by the officials from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Tuesday at a press conference for comments he made on an Accra-based radio station.

He told the radio station that there is going to be a civilian coup d’état in Ghana.

The police have since charged him with treason.
Many NDC officials including the General Secretary have expressed their dislike for the comments but they have also condemned the arrest.

Ato Forson has also condemned the arrest and detention saying, “Koku cannot organize a coup”.

US Military deal
Mr Anyidoho’s “treasonable” comments were in relation to a military pact between Ghana and the US.

Parliament ratified the agreement last Friday although Minority members had staged a walk-out in protest of the deal.

Scores of people hit the street Wednesday to demonstrate against the agreement as well.

Mr. Ato Forson said it would have been better if the government ignored the agreement in its current form

“He should bring it back to Parliament, we will work with him if the agreement is in the interest of Ghana”.
