Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, the Principal of the Methodist University College Ghana (MUCG) has called for support for the setting up of endowment fund to establish business model to grow the institution.

He said the MUCG had a lot of underutilised academic infrastructure at various university campuses across the country that could be used to turn around its fortunes, for strong financial standing and growth.

Professor Asabere-Ameyaw made the call during the 15th congregation of the university at the Dansoman Campus in Accra.

He said in spite of the daunting challenges that confronted the university for the past five years it had been able to organise significant international conferences that had boosted its image.

He expressed gratitude to all teaching and non-teaching staff who contributed in various ways to make the academic year successful.

Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, in a speech read on his behalf asked the authorities of MUCG to consider introducing distance and e-learning programmes as well as establishing learning centres in the regions to facilitate the smooth running of the programmes.

He said this would boost the admission figures which would improve the finances of the university and prospective applicants who were limited by distance and schedule of work.

Most Reverend Titus Awotwe Pratt, the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana and the Chairman of the MUCG Council said the learning institution believed in the holistic development of the individual.

He said they were not only training for academic laurels but also inculcating in the students Christian principles that would make them exhibit sound moral values in their character wherever they might find themselves.

Most Rev Awotwe Pratt said with the public-sector employment avenues being choked, the MUCG was attaching much importance to the introduction of entrepreneurship programmes in its curricula to help develop entrepreneurial mindset in the students towards wealth and job creation.

Mr Anselm Ransford Sowah, the Managing Director of the Ghana Commercial Bank and the guest speaker said the only way forward to making graduates relevant was to building collaboration between industry and academia for mutual benefit and betterment of society.

He proposed to the university to open many avenues of doing business with the bank to develop profitable working relation between the two.

The event saw 1,267 students graduating which included 238 post graduates, 1,000 first degree graduands, 11 Diploma students and 18 certificate students.
