Mr Iddrisu Musah, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Tamale has advised all policy makers to support the government by committing themselves towards helping to improve urban and Peri-urban agriculture.

He said the country needed to address critical challenges bothering on urban food security saying, 'All policy makers must be concerned and devise ways of improving agriculture production'.

He said it was important for stakeholders to collaborate with government to improve on urban environment to enhance the capacity of a sustainable food security.

Mr Musah gave the advice during a three-day technical and multi-stakeholder workshop organised by the Urban Food Plus in collaboration with the University for Development Studies in Tamale.

The workshop was to provide the opportunity for stakeholders to take stock of research findings and to also establish a dialogue platform with policy makers, Non-Governmental Organisations, research institutions, city planners and farmers to highlight the importance of urban agriculture.

It also aimed at discussing the role of urban agriculture in national development and food sustainability in the country.

Mr Musah urged Chiefs and other traditional leaders to support the Urban Food Plus project to address the challenges of food security in the country.

Professor George Nyarko, the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at the University for Development Studies in Tamale also highlighted on the Urban Food Plus project and said the project had contributed to urban agriculture to food security and urban livestock production.

He said the project had also helped to improve on wastewater filtration for agricultural production while providing social network for urban vegetable cultivation.

Urban Food Plus is an African-German partnership to enhance resource use efficiency and improve food security in urban and peri-urban agriculture of West African cities.
