Parliament Should Enact Rigorous Laws For Women

Parliament has been urged to enact rigorous laws that will remove bottlenecks impeding the growth and development of women in the country.

Mr Raphael Godlove Ahenu, the Chief Executive Officer of Global Media Foundation, a media advocacy and anti-corruption Non-Governmental Organisation gave the advice as the world marks the 2018 International Women's Day (IWD).

The IWD which falls on March 8 was instituted by the United Nation (UN) and celebrated worldwide annually to commemorate the movement of women's rights.

Globally, the day is being celebrated under the theme 'Press for Progress.'

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani on Thursday, Mr Ahenu underscored the need for legislators to press forward and progress gender parity.

Gender equality, he stressed, could be achieved if certain societal and institutional barriers were removed to motivate women to seek and climb higher levels in either politics or businesses.

Despite these barriers, Mr Ahenu observed some women in the country had made significant gains in education, better positioning themselves not only for career success but also for leadership positions.

He said though women had made inroads into managerial positions and various professional fields, they continued to lag far behind men in politics and business, because the gender gaps in perceptions about political leadership in the country were especially sharp.

Mr Ahenu observed that women leaders remained more collaborative and if they were encouraged to climb higher, particularly in politics, they would serve as critical tools to ignite accelerated national growth and development.
