University Of Mines Inaugurated Management Studies Department

The Faculty of Integrated Management Studies (FIMS) of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa has inaugurated the Department of Management Studies.

The new department will run two postgraduate management courses in Master of Business and Technology Management and Master of Science Engineering Management.

Apart from the postgraduate programmes, a one year certificate course in small scale mining and quarry administration would also be offered to help manage the institution professionally.

The programmes which will be held on weekends is expected to take off next academic year.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Vice Chancellor of UMaT, Professor Jerry Kuma, said lots of people in Tarkwa and its environs travelled to either Kumasi, Cape Coast or Accra to access programmes in management.

He said the University of Mines decided to introduce some of this management courses in Tarkwa because it was the second largest communities in the Western Region.

Prof. Kuma called on interested applicants to get enrolled onto their management programmes because they already have the track record of excellence in teaching.

The Vice Chancellor announced that a Master of Science in Mine Administration would also be introduced soon to strengthen their core human resource base and stressed they would keep to the directive of the university.

Professor Newton Amegbey, Dean of FIMS, said even though several management courses were undertaken throughout the country, that of the University of Mines was with a difference because it was offered in an institution where science, technology and engineering was significant.

He said the programme was open to almost all first degree holders, social, physical science, business engineering and technology degrees.

Prof. Amegbey said once an applicant had a good Bachelor of Science they would be able to come on board starting from the 2018/2019 academic.

The Dean of FIMS said "We want to make sure that everyone who comes to do the programme goes away knowing that he or she has learned something".

"So whereas we train people who are able to manage the technical aspects of the mining ventures we are now ready also to take off with products that are well equipped to manage the business of engineering", he added.

Dr. Anthony Ewusi, Head of the Department of Management Studies of FIMS was hopeful that the programme would save many people from traveling long distance to access such programmes and entreated Ghanaians to make time and upgrade themselves on the programme.
