Thirteen young men in the Tamale Metropolis and Sagnarigu Municipality in the Northern Region have been trained on welding and metal fabrication to equip them with self-employable skills.

They were presented with welding machines to help them set up their workshops to start business.

The one and a half years training, which began in June, 2016, was to help address the teeming youth unemployment in the Tamale Metropolis and the Sagnarigu Municipality.

The training of the beneficiaries was made possible by the Net Organisation for Youth Empowerment and Development (NOYED-Ghana), a non-governmental organisation, with funding from Empower UK.

Mr Alhassan Abdulai Iddi, Executive Director of NOYED-Ghana, who spoke during the graduation of the beneficiaries in Tamale, said they also received lessons on literacy, numeracy, entrepreneurship, gender mainstreaming and leadership to enable them to relate well with their clients to grow their business.

Mr Iddi said 'Towards the end of their training, they were registered with the National Vocational Training Institute to write the Proficiency Part (1) Examinations where they all passed.'

He appealed to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to consider the Youth Centre for Entrepreneurial Empowerment in Tamale where the beneficiaries were trained, for metallic fabrication related contracts to create opportunities for trainees to put their skills to test.

Stakeholders in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training sector in the region took turns to advise the graduands to be disciplined with their work to win the trust of their clients.

Master Alidu Mohammed Chinto, one of the graduands, thanked NOYED-Ghana for the training saying it had rescued him.

Meanwhile, NOYED-Ghana has begun training 15 other young men forming part of the second batch of trainees on the programme.
