The Community Three Livestock Farmers Association has unveiled its logo and announced an elaborate foundation anniversary celebration to encourage Ghanaian youth into farming.

The forty-one strong young men and women who have taken to urban farming on the fringes of the Sakumo wetlands, account for several hundreds of pigs, goats, sheep, grasscutters, rabbits and poultry.

Unveiling the logo, which has four hands clinging to each other with a background of livestock, Mr Akwasi Amankwaa, President, said members were committed to their vocation, national food security and the sustenance of the environment.

'We are not a political group but we support government's plans to make local food wholesome and affordable to Ghanaians. Only God knows the number of years imported meat and poultry products are kept in freezers abroad before they get to our shores.

We cannot continue to rely on others to feed us when we have all the resources to feed ourselves, 'he said.

He commended the government for the bold initiatives and programmes to promote agriculture and urged the unemployed youth to try farming to enhance their livelihoods.

'At the moment, we are in touch with the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission which gave us access to this place. All members are obedient to them and will not do anything to jeopardize the ecology of the area.'

He said members had planted over 500 coconut seedlings and would be planting more very soon.

According to him, a week-long celebration from 29th March to 2nd April which would be characterised by blood donation, health screening, a float, Church service and a grand durbar would formally announce the existence of the association.

'The theme is: Complementing the government's policy of planting for food and jobs. We invite all those who care about farming and food security to celebrate with us,' he said.
