Tema, Feb 21, GNA - The Tema Traditional Council (TTC) is to push for the introduction of a fishing course at the Manhean Senior High Technical School, Tema.

Nii Adjei Kraku II, Paramount Chief of Tema, told the Ghana News Agency that the introduction of such a course would help children interested in fishing to acquire secondary education while following their passion.

Nii Kraku added that the Council's effort to get children to school instead of spending all their time at the shore had yielded little results as some parents preferred mentoring and handing over the fishing trade to their children.

He stated that Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service must help to introduce the course for the children to acquire the needed scientific fishing theories which they could then blend with the practical knowledge they received from their fathers.

He explained that some fishermen did not appreciate the benefits to be derived from the fight against illegal fishing because they did not fully understand the scientific aspect of fishing.

The Tema Paramount Chief also disclosed that the TTC was in talk with the school authorities to provide it with land for the establishment of a poultry farm.

The poultry farm, he noted, would serve as a learning place for students while providing eggs and chicken for the market to generate income to run the school.

Nii Kraku urged government to help such initiatives to give skilled training to the youth as the increasing unemployment rate was worrying.
