CSM Screening For SHS Students In Bawku

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) and other health service providers have begun a health screening exercise for Senior High School (SHS) students in the Bawku Municipality, Garu-Tempane and the Bawku West Districts of the Upper East Region against Cerebro Spinal Meningitis (CSM).

The screening exercise comes in the wake of the recent deaths of the two students and some 11 others who went into critical conditions from the Bawku Senior High Technical and the Tempane Senior High Schools.

The exercise, which is ongoing, is geared at picking specimens of the students to ascertain the type of virus so as to identify the type of vaccine to administer.

Mrs Mary-Stella Adepeasah, Bawku Municipal Health Director, who led a team of health workers to begin the exercise, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said the exercise is paramount because it would help the GHS identify the right vaccine to use once the heat season is approaching.

Mrs Adepeasah said all is set for the exercise and urged the school authorities and the general public not to entertain the fear of any outbreak of the disease since the service was working tirelessly to prevent and contain any outbreak.

She urged members of the public and students to drink more water and avoid the sun as well as sleep in well ventilated places so as to avoid heat.

Mr Abduliah Bukari, Headmaster for the Bawku Senior High Technical School, commended the Ghana Health Service for the timely intervention adding that the exercise would help promote quality academic work.

He assured officials of the GHS that the school would adhere to the measures given so as to avoid the infection and spread of the disease.
