Bassares Must Unite To Fight Poverty And Illiteracy

Accra, Feb 16, GNA-Alhaji Moro Seidu, National President of the Bassare Youth Association has appealed to the Bassare elite to unite to fight poverty, illiteracy and diseases that have over the years plagued and placed them on a disadvantaged social ladder.

This, he said they could do by sending their children to school and sponsoring them to undertake skilful vocations and professions that would make them independent and financially self-reliant.

Alhaji Seidu made this appeal during the maiden interactive meeting of the elite Bassares in Accra, where hundreds of Bassares met to socialise and display some of their traditions.

The meeting was also attended by some Bassares, who travelled from all the regions of the country to be part of the historic event.

Giving a brief history of the Bassare Youth Association, the President named persons like; Colonel Dawuni, Alhaji Habib among others who spearheaded the roadmap since 1972 at the time that it invigorated them to undertake projects that could let them count among the ethnic groups.

Although the vibrancy took a nose-dive somewhere along the line, Alhaji Seidu said Bassares since 2011 started reviving the association and it was therefore imperative to engage all to make their activities useful and workable.

He called on all Bassares, wherever they find themselves to aptly respond to the roll-call for them to take up activities that would be beneficiary to their people at home.

Mr Toni Bakawu, National General Secretary of the Association announced that barring any last minute hitch, Bassares would inaugurate their first ever Bassare Traditional Area in May this year and asked for all hands on deck to bring it to fruition.

On the creation of the Eastern Corridor Region, Mr Bakawu said the Bassare Youth Association had been part of the negotiations and were fully represented in all the phases of the negotiations.

He said between May 23 and May 25, this year, they would hold their annual National Congress in Tatale in the Northern Region and appealed to all Bassares to brace themselves up for the congress that would discuss pertinent issues concerning their development.

Mr Dominic Napare, Member of Parliament for Sene East in the Brong-Ahafo Region advised Bassares in the tertiary institutions to link up with the National Executives of the Bassare Youth Association to identify employment opportunities for the youth.

He appealed to students to team-up wherever they find themselves as network groups to create opportunities that would make them self-employed.

Also in attendance were; Mr Stephen Balado Manu, former member of Parliament for Ahafo-Ano South, in the Ashanti Region and Mr Cecil Yanwube, former Member of Parliament for Tatale Sanguli in the Northern Region.

There were also executives and Patrons of the Association and leading members that had spearheded the development of Bassares.

The people also the rich traditional dances such as; Lawa, Kibagnu and ganga.
