Amidu At Vetting: I'm Ready And Well Prepared For The Worse

Special Prosecutor nominee, Martin Amidu says he is prepared for the outcome of his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee slated for Tuesday.

The anti-corruption campaigner was nominated to a tumultuous applause but he first has to be vetted and approved by Parliament in line with the Special Prosecutor Act (Act 959).

In a statement Monday, Mr Amidu said he will have nothing to win or lose if the lawmakers decide to shoot down his nomination or approve him.

"One thing I know from the outpouring of support...is that if the president's wishes were put to a national referendum, all the 275 constituencies of the country will return an overwhelmingly positive endorsement for his choice," he said.

The former Attorney-General is set to appear before the Appointments Committee to consider his nomination by president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Governance experts have predicted his vetting is likely to be the longest in the history of Parliament.

As a card-bearing member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Amidu’s nomination has been lauded as a bold step to fighting corruption in the country.

While some members of governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) have praised the president’s choice, some of them have been less enthused about his appointment.

The Minority in Parliament has served a notice it will thoroughly scrutinize Mr Amidu’s capacity and preparedness for the work.

But the former NDC Vice presidential candidate said he is ready for any decision the lawmakers will take after the vetting.

There are only two outcomes possible after the public hearing – to approve or disapprove the president’s nominee, he said.

“Whatever the outcome, I will have nothing personally to win in or lose,” he said, urging Ghanaians who may not be able to witness the public hearing to stay calm.

“I will forever remain grateful for the outpouring of support across the country on the occasion of the president’s announcement of my nomination for approval as Special Prosecutor.”
