Should Ghana's Presidency And Executives Be Limited On How Much They Spend?

President Nana Akufo- Addo

There is a debate on some Ghanaian forums as to the economic gains of the Nana Akufo Addo government. One of them is the fact that the debt to GDP ratio has been reduced, meaning we are not borrowing as much as we used to. Great job indeed! Is it good enough?

The numbers have dropped but it is still hovering around 70%! - meaning our government borrows about Ghs 65-70 of every Ghs 100 we generate!

How would any man boast that they are a good manager of their household if they make Ghs 1,000 per month but borrow Ghs 700 every month!

On todays GLU forum one Professor posted a video of the number of vehicles accompanying the President to /from Church.

This kind of entourage seen in Ghana wherever the President goes has been like that, at least in so far as I recollect from the first time former President Kufuor came to my town of Abetifi in 2004!

I counted 15 of these $90,000 to 100,000 valued SUVs in the entourage. And Ghana had declared itself bankrupt or as HIPC, member of the highly indebted poor nations. We were seeking forgiveness or write-off of interest on our loans! It seems Ghanaian leadership have no sense of shame! The African man has no pride anymore! Most seem to be forced to steal when in government service in other to live a good life!

As a nation this cannot be allowed to continue! No! There needs to be a legal limit placed on the amount of money spent on the Presidency as also on any government executive.

The people at the Presidency order thousands of these vehicles, an estimate of 10,000 of them, for official use! And recently in February 2018 it was reported some of them cost $211,600 ($9.1 million for 43 vehicles) each made bullet proof!

Why would anybody order 43 bullet proof vehicles for a nation that spends 70% of all its revenue in paying for debts? Are some of these people crazy, mad or what??

The irony and common sense is that sometimes reports indicate there is not enough money to pay doctors and nurses and teachers for months!

The people of Ghana must be out of our minds to accept this nonsensical customs and traditions! Nobody is so stupid to work hard and pay taxes for somebody elected to live like a King with the privilege extended to other thousands!

Why can't these elected and appointed people work for their living and cars like everybody else?

The global reputation held by many black men in power seems to be that we have no sense of discipline. It is a disgrace on all of us allowing other leaders around the world to dare use vile language for us!

We should take this issue to the Supreme Court to determine if the President should be limited constitutionally on his spending habits. Else we are doomed!
