Accra, Aug. 4,GNA - The Police Administration said on Thursday it would embark on a special exercise to inspect, examine and re-register weapons of private individuals, which had been lawfully acquired. The measure is to stem the rising incidence of violent crime, especially armed robbery in the country.

A statement signed by Deputy Superintendent David S. Eklu of Police Public Relations Office, urged those in possession of shotguns, riffles, garden guns and pistols to personally take them with the necessary documents and two recent passport-size photographs to Regional Police Headquarters in their respective regions from September 1 to September 30 this year. All those in possession of pistols are to report at the CID Headquarters in Accra with their document and two recent passport- size photographs within the same period, the statement said.

The Police, however, advised those in possession of such weapons to co-operate in the exercise to ensure that the necessary legal procedures were adhered to for the avoidance any further action that would bring them into conflict with the law.
