North Tongu Member of Parliament (MP), Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has asked the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to swallow its pride and acknowledge the economic achievements of the past regime.

The former Deputy Education Minister said the government’s free senior high school (SHS) education policy and other ambitious programmes would not have been rolled out last year had it not been the economic achievements of ex-president John Mahama.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Thursday, the lawmaker said the attempt to bastardise the past National Democratic Congress (NDC) government does not inure to the benefit of the country.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has maintained he inherited an avalanche of debts and weak economy from his predecessor.

Since his swearing-in in January last year, he has paid more than ¢1billion out of the ¢1.6billion debts owed road contractors. The Audit Service also certified the payment of ¢5.5billion debts accrued under the past regime.

Despite the debts he inherited, the president has been able to roll out some key ambitious programmes such as the Free SHS, Planting for Food and Jobs and the National Digital Addressing System.

Reacting to the continuous lamentation of the government, Mr Ablakwa said the past regime was not about “all doom and gloom” as the NPP would want Ghanaians to believe.

He wondered how the government could implement some of his programmes if it inherited an empty public purse.

“The NPP cannot say that it was all about doom and gloom, it was all about negative and liability…it doesn’t add up,” he said.

But Deputy Finance Minister, Abena Osei-Asare has credited the government’s prudent economic measures for the successful implementation of the programmes.

“We met a very bad economy yet we put prudent economic measures in place,” she said.
