The Accident That Saved My Life

I am three years old today! Happy birthday to me! Hurray!! No. This, certainly, is not one of my jokes. Biologically, I was born in the late 80s. I have spent over two and a half centuries just occupying space, here, on Earth. Until quite recently, I was virtually only breathing, thinking I was living.

I was lucky enough to have identified my calling early in life; though it was initially blurred. But like most of us would do, I wanted to settle myself first before settling my Creator and humanity.

The Creator has been patient enough with me; Posterity on the other hand, has also waited far too long, for my manifestation. Then, three years ago, on one of those normal evenings, in the month of Love, the two – God and Posterity, together, had conspired against me! It was exactly three years ago, today.

When it’s about God alone, His patience with you is inexhaustible and eternal; nonetheless, when Posterity is involved, God will do everything for it. Absolutely, everything! Even if it means setting on fire, some “bushes” in your life just to grasp your attention. Count yourself blessed if He chooses this alternative. The other alternative is for Him to take the Grace that comes with your specific calling or gifting and anoint someone else with it, mostly, somebody unassuming.

I was fortunate He chose the former alternative. While on my way home from work and crossing the N1 highway in Accra, I was lucky enough to have been knocked down by a car. It was a Monday! Feb 2, 2015.

On lookers could only remarked: “Hey, you're such a lucky guy; thank your God”. They were right, I still am, a lucky guy! Till today, I can't fathom out how I was saved! I only had few scratches on my body and some internal issues (which will be a story for another day) as an X-ray scan would later reveal.

As the gentleman driving the car was transporting me to the hospital, and while I was staring at the KATANGA (University Hall, K.N.U.S.T) sticker on the windscreen of the car, and for the first time in six years (when I first encountered it), began to make a meaning out of their popular statement: THE LEGEND LIVES ON, I heard this silent and yet, loud voice in my spirit: WHAT IF YOU DIED TODAY?

It’s worth noting here that, I’ve seen and read: THE LEGEND LIVES ON, severally, prior to that day only that at that moment, the meaning became more real to me. When you’ve had an encounter with “death”, things you took for granted for years become so precious and sources of wisdom to you. Indeed, legends live on! God can use anything, both animate and inanimate, to convey His message, but to send a car bearing a sticker that remind one of: THE LEGEND LIVES ON, to knock me down at that crucial moment of my life (I just began my career as an engineer two months prior), to me, is the greatest form of relaying a message so urgent to me.

WHAT IF YOU DIED TODAY? Can you think about it for a moment? WHAT IF YOU DIED TODAY? Would your name live on? Would your legendary stand the test of time?

This event and question would later change the whole trajectory of my life. Seriously, what if I died that day?! I would just have been another contribution to the Earth! I would have died without fulfilling the purpose for which I was given the privilege into this world. I would have died with all my potentials (Hero) locked up within me.

Between that evening and today, a lot has happened. There have been lows and highs. I've not figured it all out yet. But every step I took for these past three years, however sweet or painful, rough or smooth, was somehow, so so fulfilling.

To you reading this, my message to you on my third year on this Earth is simple: You might not be as lucky as I was. Yours might not be a car knock. Even if it is, you might not even survive yours. But whatever you do, make sure you live. Get to work immediately. Don't ignore that tiny little voice that keeps reminding you of the things you've been designed to do. You see that dissatisfaction you keep feeling at the workplace regardless of the fat paycheck? You once loved doing that thing but now you feel a great vacuum doing it. That's your Creator given you all the clues. I was stubborn. And he sent that car to put me on track.

I'm not asking you to resign from your work as I later did. I am not asking you to do it my way or the ways of others. All that I'm saying is, no matter what you do, never miss your purpose, never allow your potentials (Hero) to go rusty. Before you die, live!

Maybe you have wasted the 'first half' of your life as I did. But starting from today, you can decide to do something about it. Do something about that potential or talent you know you have. Do something about that secret dream you have. If you look deeper into yourself in consultation with your Maker, you'll come to the, "This one, right here, is what's meant for me and I will focus on it henceforth, no matter what" zone; and there, you'll find boundless possibilities and opportunities; there, you'll do things that will awe even you; and most importantly, there, you'll be walking in the purpose of your Creator for your life.

Now let me tell you a secret. This is the starting point of everything I do today and will ever do. This is how the book, Unleashing the Hero in You was born; this is the story behind it. That journey began from the day of the accident until it was finally launched on Sept 3, 2016. We often take the last words of someone who's about dying seriously, right? I see Unleashing the Hero in You, more or less, as a book that contains my last words or to put it more perfectly, a book that contains God's last words to me and by extension, you. My name is Elorm Hermann. I am Original, Special, Unique, and I am here, on Earth, to express myself fully – renewing minds, bringing out the Hero in people and to help another human being succeed.

Have you discovered your purpose yet? Stop existing and live. No matter how unqualified or unfit you think you are for your dreams, it was Ark Buck who once admonished: “Though good may come of practice, this primal truth endures: the first time anything is done, it is done by amateurs.”

What if you died today? Would your legendary live on? In the pursuit of your dreams, never make the mistake of predicting how your visions would unfold. That, my friend, is a recipe to frustration. God, destiny, has a way of readjusting your plans. Your job is to keep your focus and work smart and hard.

Your dream (purpose) is your fate. However, in my three years of truly living, which I’m celebrating today, this is the greatest lesson life has taught: Life alters our plans. And because it has better ideas as to how we would reach our destinations, it turns our dreams around. As if a riddle, destiny reroutes our plans and fulfils our dreams in ways we wouldn’t have expected.

Happy three years anniversary to me!
There is a Hero in you: unleash it!
