Tramadol has become a household for the Youth of Kpandai District

Tramadol is a narcotic-like pain reliever, a pain relief drug used to treat moderate or severe pains, is now a household word on the lips of the youth in the Kpandai District.

However, the wrongful use of Tramadol according to medical experts can cause difficulty in breathing or even death. A tramadol overdose can be fatal, especially in a child or other person using the medicine without a prescription.

Some youth in the District have become addicted to the drug, using it in large doses and mixing it with some energy drinks such as Storm, 5star, Rush and many to boost their energy without medical prescription.

The believe that youth, including students, reportedly also take the drug to increase their desire during sexual intercourse with their partners and also to help them set over night to learn, which is not healthy for the human body.

While health workers, parents, civil society organisations and the security agencies, are all worried about the abuse of Tramadol in the District, little did they know that there are more dangerous substances that are killing the youth slowly.

Whilst the use of Tramadol has gained notoriety among the drugs that the youth widely abuse in the District, there are more dangerous substances in the communities which are abused on daily basis.

The smoking of substances such as nim tree and pawpaw leaves and soaking of “wee” leaves in alcohol which is consumed as breakfast, the inhaling of psychoactive substances such as petrol, turpentine and Venegra among the youth to get themselves intoxicated.

The District Chief (Kofi Tatablata) however, condemned the situation as a criminal act within the environs of the District "Tramadol, Wee and some hard drugs has become the most trading substance within the District, most youth have the mind when they take those drugs help boost their sexual desire and energy wise, which has lead to some minor problems within the District".

He revealed, most youth are involved in arm robbery, murder, wrong doing and minor misunderstandings which leads to killing of one another in the District. Drug addiction is a problem to the society as well as the individual. A drug addict is a prospective criminal especially in terms of prostitution and robbery. Since drug addicts have a deep desire for drugs, they commit crimes in order to get money to buy the drugs.

An addict revealed, "the intake of hard drugs makes us charge like buffalos, gaining extra energies to do more work, when I take 'wee' for instance I don't care if you are police man or my father. Am on a different earth, I do what I feel like doing"

According to some users, it makes them to work like robots on their farms and in all other activities they found themselves. It makes users to behave in an extraordinary manner.

But the bad aspect of taking such hard drugs are that, it makes users impair in vigour very quickly. It also makes the physical frame of users look fragile and loose weight and thoughts within the shortest possible time. dizziness or lightheadedness when getting up from a lying or sitting, severe redness, swelling, and itching of the skin, difficult urination and frequent urge to urinate, false or unusual sense of well being, inability to have or keep an erection and many more.

noisy breathing, sighing, shallow breathing, a slow heart rate or weak pulse, a light-headed feeling, seizure (convulsions), missed menstrual periods, impotence, sexual problems, loss of interest in sex or low cortisol levels - nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, dizziness, worsening tiredness or weakness, agitation, hallucinations, fever, sweating, shivering, fast heart rate, muscle stiffness, twitching, loss of coordination, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
