Ambassador Extraordinaire Gives Food To Nsawam, Kumasi Prisoners

Mr Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng, Ambassador Extraordinaire of Prisons and Executive Director of Crime Check Foundation, has called on government to increase the current feeding fee of Prison inmates in the country from GH¢ 1.80 per a day to GH¢ 5.00.

He said this would not only provide quality food for prisoners, but also ensure improved health status.

Mr Kwarteng, speaking in an interview with the GNA, described as unacceptable, the poor quality of food being provided for prisoners; a situation, he believed, had further affected the health of most of them, who are in critical health conditions.

The Ambassador Extraordinaire of Prisons made the call, after he had feted inmates at the condemned block of the Nsawam Medium Security Prison and sick inmates at Kumasi central prison.

He said the Foundation was able to fete the inmates with support from three philanthropists in the United Kingdom; Mr and Mrs Opoku Agyemang and Sean Frimpong.

He said, much as prisoners have limited rights, they deserved to be treated with dignity and respect in order not to defeat the purpose for which they have been kept in custody, which was to reform and rehabilitate them.

He also urged government to fast track the passage of the Alternative Sentencing Bill into law to reduce the congestion in the country's prisons which still remained high despite the introduction of the Justice For All Programme.
