The Institute of Distance and e-Learning of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Kumasi Campus, has admitted 10,013 fresh students to pursue various under-graduate and post-graduate programmes.

They are drawn from three regions - Ashanti, Brong-Ahafo and Western.

The acting Vice Chancellor, the Reverend Father Professor Anthony Afful-Broni, said the goal was to provide opportunity for everybody to access university education conveniently from their doorstep at manageable cost.

Performing the matriculation ceremony in Kumasi, he said this was being done without sacrificing quality.

He expressed discomfort with the practice where some students' arbitrary changed programmes they had been admitted to pursue and said it had been presenting challenges, during their graduation.

That, he said, could not continue and announced that the 'change of programme is no longer allowed once a student is admitted and has successfully undergone all matriculation procedures.'

He spoke of plans to introduce an on-line information system to help manage students' records.

The Rev Fr Prof Afful-Broni said the system would be implemented in the second semester of this academic year, and would require students to register their courses on-line.

He indicated that with this, students could check their examination results as soon as they were uploaded in order to verify their registration history.

It would also enable them to request for their transcripts, attestation letters and tutorial time table, on-line.

The Rev Fr Prof Afful-Broni advised the students to be studious, telling them that, higher education offered them the chance to contribute meaningfully to the nation's development.
