Alarm Blows Over Destruction Of Forest Reserve At Gomoa Kweikrom

Some Concern citizens of Gomoa Kwekikrom have raised alarm about the massive destruction of the forest reserves by some alleged illegal sand mining and timbers contractors.

According to the residents, the swift intervention of the Ministry of Lands and Forestry and Ministry of Environment and Science will stop these illegal sand winners who have invaded the forest reserves.

Addressing the Media, Mr Kofi Mensah, a citizen of the town and resident in Accra said it is sad that all efforts made by the President |Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to fight against galamsey and the destruction of the environment by some persons would hit a rock.

Mr Mensah said genuine contractors who have been granted permits and licenses to operate and reclaim the land are not allowed to work.

Mr Mensah took the newsmen round the forests to have first-hand information of the damage caused as a result of illegal sand mining and felling of trees.

Mr Kobena Entsie, another resident expressed disgust about the way and manner some contractors who have been granted permits and have been prevented from entering the area to work while the illegal sand miners association are having a fields day.

Mr Entsie therefore appealed to the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI), National Security Minister, and President Nana Akufo-Addo to intervene to salvage state resources.

Mr Entsie expressed the hope that the state security agencies and the Presidency would to tackle and halt the menace.
