A Class Six pupil of Alpha Beta Education Centres, Master Ganesh Xavier Love-Antwi has won the World Champion trophy (Basic Category) at the 22nd Universal Concept of Mental Arithmetic System (UCMAS) competition held from 5th to 12th December 2017 in Kuala Lampar, Malaysia.
This achievement is the first by any Ghanaian pupil at the UCMAS competition since its inception 22 years ago in Malaysia.
Master Love-Antwi, 11 years, won the Basic Category by answering 200 mental arithmetic questions in just under 8 minutes. The competition had over 1,000 participants from 75 countries.
He was amongst 10 pupils from the UCMAS Learning Centre at Alpha Beta School, all of whom won various awards in the different categories they competed in.
“We are excited by the tremendous achievement by our pupils at the international level and the honour they have done not only for our school, but Ghana and the entire African Continent”, says Mrs Florence Adjepong, Principal of the Alpha Beta School.
She said “Alpha Beta looks forward to expanding the brain capacity of all pupils on the program”. Adding that children who partake in the UCMAS program develop great photographic memory, good retention and recollection skills, enhanced listening skills, excellent accuracy skills, and build self-confidence.
The UCMAS concept is a brain development program run for over 300 schools through 50 learning centres for children between the ages of 5-12 years across the country.
Alpha Beta Education Centres runs the UCMAS program as part of its curriculum for grade one to grade six. Students from other schools are also able to attend the after-school program at its UCMAS Learning Centre. The i-Maths program runs at Alpha Beta from Pre-school to Kindergarten.
Other students from Alpha Beta who won awards include: Master Richard Laryea who was the 1st runner-up in the Basic level, Ishmeal Hector Nii Nortey and Eric Ofori Ampofo who both placed 2nd at the Basic Level, and Tracy Owusuaa Ampofo, Jesse Yaw Amoako Asante, Shiloh Ama Serwaa Asante and Manuella Efua Nuama Asante who placed 3rd at the Basic Level.
At the i-Maths Competition which targets pre-school children, Miss Lauren Ewenam Efe Donkor achieved 2nd place.
