Some Ghanaians have congratulated Mr Adjei Sowah, Mayor of Accra, for his effort to keep the traders off the pavements and encouraged him to continue with the exercise without fear or favour.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, a week after the decongestion exercise, a section of the people interviewed expressed appreciation to government for the exercise but suggested that the hawkers be given alternative places to help sustain the gains.

Mr Richmond Adjei, a social worker, said the decongestion exercise had been done for years and admitted that anytime it was done, it created a spacious environment and people were able to move freely.

'Just before last year's festive season, people had to struggle to use one narrow route,' he said, adding that, passing through the market today, after the decongestion was refreshing. I have now realised how spacious and neat Accra market was.

He said the Mayor, since the beginning of 2018, had proved beyond reasonable doubt that he was fit for the position.

Mrs Gifty Amoah, who is an entrepreneur, was happy about the changes the exercise had brought to the market, especially the free movement of persons and urged government to maintain the initiative.

Mr Isaac Prah, a photographer in Dansoman, also said government must continue to maintain the orderliness and strict compliance to policies by all to accelerate the pace of development.

Ms Abigail Ntow, a teacher, also said, walking in Accra from 'COCOBOD-Railway-UTC-Rawlings Park' was with ease.

'The whole central business district was free for human movement', she said

She said when she passed through Accra, she noticed a yellow mark in front of various shops, which indicated that shop owners should not cross that line.

She, however, suggested that the government should be bold and sustain the initiative to keep Accra free and clean.
