Winneba Local Prisons Holds Thanksgiving Service
09.01.2018 LISTEN

Mr. Augustine Bopam, officer in charge of Winneba Local Prisons, has called on Ghanaians to support ex-convicts to help them re-integrate into the society.

He said the main challenge that confronts the service is the public's negative perception about ex-convicts and if such notions are eschewed it could help complement efforts of the institution to rehabilitate prison inmates to become self-sufficient.

Mr Bopam made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency after a thanksgiving Service held at the prisons.

He said as the service strives to effectively rehabilitate inmates, the desired impact will not yield the needed results if society does not change existing mindsets and help facilitate their reintegration into the community.

Mr Bopam said overcrowding in the facility is also a challenge as they are currently housing 220 inmates instead of the required 80.

He said the facility has established a computer laboratory and carpentry shop where the inmates are being trained to acquire technical and vocational skills.

Earlier in his address at the service, he thanked the Almighty God for guiding this far without recording any disasters and also prayed for God's continuous protection and guidance to help them reform inmates in their charge.

Reverend Oppong Brobbey, in a sermon delivered at the function, said we need to express our profound gratitude to the Lord for all that he has done for us.

He commended the authorities of facility for having time for God and prayed that the Lord will continue to shower his blessings and grace on them.
