THE MARINE, Railways & Ports Headquarters of the Tema Regional Police Command are holding two suspects for allegedly stealing a 20-footer container filled with 666 boxes of alcoholic beverages at Tema.

Kwame Oteng alias Ortega, a 35-year-old driver and Issah Munkaila, 40 years of age, were said to have diverted the consignment meant for a warehouse in Accra, and sold some boxes of the alcoholic beverages to one Hajia Fati, who is currently at large.

Briefing DAILY GUIDE, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Joseph Benefo Darkwah, Tema regional police spokesperson, indicated that on December 11, 2017, Oteng, driver of a truck with registration number GR 1851 Y, and two others were engaged to deliver alcoholic beverages which had been cleared from the Tema Port, to a warehouse at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.

According to him, the two other people delivered their consignments at the said destination but Oteng diverted his consignment to a yard being guarded by Issah Munkalia at Community 9, Tema.

ASP Benefo Darkwah continued that the suspects sold some of the stolen goods to one Hajia Fati, adding that “Otega went into hiding after selling the goods.”

However, on December 31, 2017, the police spokesman said that Oteng was apprehended at his hideout at Techiman in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

He claimed that Oteng led the police to his accomplice – Issah Munkaila – who had kept 25 boxes of the alcoholic beverages in his yard at Community 9.

Four days later, 296 boxes of the stolen items were retrieved from a house at Valco Flats, a suburb of Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region.

ASP Darkwah added that the police later recovered additional 345 boxes from a hideout at Tema Community 2.

Both Oteng and Munkaila had admitted the offence, according to the police spokesman, and they will be processed before court when investigations are completed.
