MTN Ghana Foundation Celebrates “Christmas Babies” In Nine Hospitals

Accra, January 4, 2018 - As part of activities marking the 10th Anniversary celebration of MTN Ghana Foundation, MTN staffvolunteers distributed 140 hampers to babies born on Christmas day in selected hospitals across the country.

The hampers, each comprising blankets, diapers, towels, shawls, bibs, toiletries, clothes and other baby essentials were distributed to mothers in 9 hospitals in four regions of Ghana. Mothers with multiple births were given additional hampers for each baby.

The hospitals are Tamale Teaching Hospital and Tamale Central Hospital all in the Northern region and in Ashanti region, the KomfoAnokye Teaching Hospital, Suntreso Hospital and Tafo Government Hospital. In the Greater Accra and Western regions MTN Staff presented gifts to babies at the Tema General Hospital, Raphael Medical Center, EffiaNkwanta Regional Hospital andEssikado Community Hospital respectively.

Commenting on the distribution of hampers, the Acting Corporate Services Executive Mrs. Georgina Asare Fiagbenu said the donation was in line with Foundation’s commitment to brighten the lives of mothers and their babies.

“Christmas, as we all know is a season for showing love. We did this to put smiles on the faces of these mothers to make them feel loved and share in the joy of the season, she said.”

The mothers of the babies who were overjoyed commended MTN Ghana Foundation for the exceptional show of love. The management of all the hospitals visited expressed their gratitude to MTN and commended them for the kind gesture.

Since 2011, the MTN Ghana Foundation has donated over 1500 hampers to babies born between 24^th and 26^th December. The donation is one of the several ways the MTN Ghana Foundation has helped to make Christmas memorable for mothers during in Christmas.

Prior to the distribution of hampers to babies, MTN Ghana Foundation organized Christmas parties for about 3000 children in selectedschools across the country. The Christmas parties were held for children at Glefe Basic School-Glefe at MpoaseiDansoman;Mampong School for the Deaf, Mampong;Sekondi/Takoradi School for the Deaf Secondary and Zuarungu community.

In the space of 10 years, theMTN Foundation has improved access to healthcare by building hospital blocks and CHPS Compounds and donated medical equipment to various health centres. Some health projects the MTN Ghana Foundation has undertaken include the construction of a 40 bed maternity block for Tema General Hospital, Neonatal Care Center for Tamale Teaching Hospital, refurbishment of the 2nd floor maternity block of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, construction of a maternity block for Ejisu Government Hospital the provision of an Emergency Center for Atua Government Hospital.In all the Foundation invested USD 13 million in about 142 projects across the countrywhich is directly impacting an estimated 4 million and several others indirectly.
