Fire Service Begins Fire Free Christmas Campaigns
20.12.2017 LISTEN

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has launched a Fire Free Christmas Campaign to educate the public on fire safety measures to prevent fire during and after the festive season.

Divisional Officer Grade II (DOII) Naomi Ofori-Adubea, the Commander in charge of the Ministries Fire Station launched the campaign on the theme: 'Fire Free Christmas' at Tema Station in Accra.

DOII Ofori-Adubea urged the public to attempt controlling a fire outbreak before it gets out of hand since it becomes difficult to manage when it's out of control, adding that, the public should not allow fire to get the upper hand.

She said the core mandate of the GNFS was to prevent and manage 'undesired fire' saying that, 'the GNFS is to be proactive by not waiting for fire to rage before we extinguish, but to prevent fires from occurring'.

She said the GNFS has the mandate to create and sustain awareness of hazards of fire, provide technical advice for building plans, inspect and offer technical advice on fire extinguishers as well as to train and organise fire volunteer squads.

The Commander said a research carried out on the causes of fire outbreaks revealed that, illegal connections, cooking in the markets, usage of candles and coils, unattended coal pots and gas stoves were the common causes of fire outbreaks in the market places in Ghana.

She classified all the aforementioned causes as negligence, adding that, there were other minimal causes such as accidents, arson, and acts of God.

DOII Ofori-Adubea urged the public to desist from any act of negligence that could cause fire outbreak, especially as the Harmattan season approaches.

She said the public must shun acts such as smoking, illegal connection, burning of rubbish, leaving gas stoves and coal pots unattended to after cooking in the market place among others.

She said: 'Should fire occur, call 192 first but not a radio station because the GNFS personnel may not be listening to the radio at the time of incidence. Other contact numbers are 0299340732, 0299340680, or 0299340643.'
