DEC 19, 2017 LISTEN

Mrs. Theodosia W. Jackson, Principal of the Jackson College of Education, has called for collaborative efforts of all stakeholders to promote education in Ghana.

According to her, knowledge is power and nobody should downplay

the socio-economic relevance of education to the country.

She says it is time chiefs, parents and teachers, Town Development Committees and other opinion leaders to make conscious efforts to institute proactive measures to complement the efforts of government by improvising educational infrastructures that would promote and develop education to the required standards.

The principal’s concern stems from the falling standards of education due to inadequate educational infrastructure, thereby shifting the responsibility of providing all educational needs on the government.

Mrs. Jackson indicated that government alone should not be blamed for falling standards in education because it cannot singularly shoulder all the educational needs since it owes it an equal responsibility to see to a better health care delivery system, robust agriculture, sound economy, and provision of social intervention programmes.

According to her, communities cannot rely solely on the government for all their developmental needs and condemned a situation where even inadequate furniture in Day Care Centres are blamed on the government while parents and guardian could assist.

“If parents detest a situation where their kids sit on bare floor in their homes, why would they be happy to see them sit on bare floor at the Day Care Centres without making any efforts to provide them with tables and chairs?”, she queried.

The College Principal also called for massive educational campaign to concientise the people on personal hygiene and thus inculcate discipline in the society at large.

Mrs. Jackson said, children should be disciplined and that a lack of it should not be seen as their right to a carefree life, noting that indiscipline could have rippling effects on the society if not checked. She called for public education on the dangers of wanton felling of trees in our forests and destruction of water bodies.

The renowned educationist critiqued the situation where prospective developers build mansions only to rely principally on government to provide amenities for them; she called on such category of people to be mindful of the need to contribute towards the development of their residential areas.

Mrs. Jackson said governance tends to be difficult if almost every social need is shifted on the government. She therefore called for the adoption of positive development strategies by all stakeholders to ensure a prosperous future for all.

She said NGOs, philanthropists and individuals should be ready to contribute towards the provision of infrastructure in the areas of education, health, road network, water and sanitation.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Jackson has announced plans to institute an Environmental award for schools with good landscaping and environmental sanitation.
