Female pensioners in Germany receive an average of 53 per cent less money than their male counterparts, a study released Thursday showed, the second-largest so-called "gender pension gap" in the European Union after Luxembourg.

The Institute of Economic and Social Research (WSI) said that the figure had been calculated by taking into account state, workplace and private pensions in the 2015 calendar year.

According to WSI, the main reasons for the gap are the fact that women more often work part-time jobs - or not at all - due to family obligations, and the fact had that women often earned less than men for the same work.

The institute said that women drawing from a state pension took home an average of 634 euros (739 dollars) per month, while men received an average of 1,154 euros.
