MCE Calls For Calm At Kuntunse

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ga West Assembly, Clement Wilkinson, has called on residents of Kuntunse to exercise restraint and desist from causing unrest in the area.

He said the assembly would resolve the dispute between residents and management of Happy Sunshine Company Limited, a tomato factory operating in the area.

The residents of Kuntunse-Satellite have announced plans to embark on a demonstration on Saturday, December 16, 2017 to protest against the operations of the tomato factory.

According to the residents, the peaceful demonstration would commence at about 8am.

The protestors would march through the main street to Koans Estate and return to the main entrance of Happy Sunshine Company Limited, the tomato factory.

However, Mr Wilkinson said even though residents have the right to embark on demonstration, there was also the need for the parties to remain calm to enable the assembly and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to address the problems.

“The company, which is situated on about four plots of land, near the satellite zone, employs about 300 residents of the area.

He said the closure of the company would negatively affect the employees, adding that the activities of the company must be checked to ensure that residents are satisfied and their rights not infringed upon.

“As father for all, I will have to make sure that residents live in peace while those without employment also have their peace to work. I will personally look into the matter, and have the problems resolved,” he told residents.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently shut down the multi-million tomato facility operated by some Chinese expatriates after residents complained of thick smoke and noise from the factory.

Residents have called for the relocation of the company from the residential area.
