The Vortuame Battor Community Farmers Association has appealed to the North Tongu District Assembly to ensure that they are considered for the One Village One Dam project.

Mr Emmanuel Deku, Chairman of the Association, made the appeal at the closing ceremony of a 4-day advocacy training organized for its members at Sogakofe.

The training, held under the theme: 'Constructing standard dams for deprived farming communities in North Tongu District', was sponsored by the BUSAC Fund.

It was to equip the members with skills to help them effectively advocate for policy makers to address their concerns and to keep abreast with knowledge on modern farming practices.

Mr Deku said the failed Volta Prairie Aveyime Rice project has brought hardship to them, since they were relocated far away from the banks of the Volta River which was their source of livelihood to a place call Nyatikpo Deve in North Tongu District in 2007.

He said over 400 farmers were relocated to their current place, some of whom are into the farming of various produce as well as animal husbandry.

During the dry session our farming activities come to a halt and the cattle die regularly due to non-availability of water and this is unlike the period when they were located on the banks of the Volta River, he said.

He said they have made several appeals to the Assembly for a dam to be located in their community but this has not been fruitful.

'We are calling on the current government to come to our aid, by constructing dams for us to boost our production and help us pay our outstanding loans'.

Mr Delali Ndor and Mr Victus Tetteh resource persons engaged by BUSAC, schooled the members through the concept and effective advocacy, which included, what is advocacy, management, book keeping, enterprise triangle, enabling environment, pyramid of regulations, and virtues circle.

Mr Ndor advised the group to team up as a unified body to make use of the tuition, knowledge and skills they have acquired.
