The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) in collaboration with JEKORA Ventures, a waste management company in Accra, will establish a re-cycling plant in Kumasi in 2018 in its effort to ensure clean environment and also to generate another source of income from the waste materials hitherto discarded at landfills.

The Metropolitan Chief Executive Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi dropped this hint when a team of environmental experts from in Accra called on him in his office seeking partnership with the Assembly for the take-off of the proposed project.

“l am delighted at your company’s proposal and l pledge my support to ensure a successful establishment. l believe it will be one of the best legacies I will bequeath to the citizens of Kumasi”, the Mayor emphasized.

The project, if established, will be another remarkable feat chalked by the MCE in less than one year of taking up the job.

He says he is determined to restore Kumasi to its status as garden city as well as make it one of the cleanest cities in the Sub-Saharan region.

The leader of the JEKORA team, Felix Laryea explained his company’s core business is to provide solid waste collection services and produce organic compost in partnership with the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies. He says the company has been in operation for the past seven years in Accra and Tema and now seeks to extend its activities to Kumasi.

“The issue of landfills will be a thing of the past if the recycling project is established”, he stated.

Accompanying the team was a representative from AYA-GREEN Initiatives also based in Accra, Akosua Amuzu who disclosed theirs was an environmental and child development advocacy organization specializing in environmental concern as well as understanding the threats and conflicts in today’s world.

According to her, AYA-GREEN has been in partnership with JEKORA to ensure citizens become custodians of environmental behavioral issues in promoting clean, green environment for healthy life and their focus is on basic institutions where sensitization and education on separation of waste materials are conducted.

Mrs. Amuzu stated the exercise has been a huge success in Accra and Tema and realizing Kumasi as another catchment area, they decided to come down to share in the vision of the Mayor, Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi.
