AMA Moves For Clean Accra Agenda

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has renewed its call on residents in the Metropolis to be conscious of the sanitation condition in their surroundings.

Mohammed Adjei Sowah, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), who made the call at a Town Hall Meeting at Osu, also expressed concern about the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains and other unapproved sites.

He said to maintain a clean, safe and pleasant environment in human settlements, the AMA needs to infuse new dimensions that would address the ever increasing sanitation problems in the Metropolis

He said the vision of President Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo requires a change in policy, action plans, city cleansing enforcement mechanisms and attitudinal change of the people.

'It is sad to see the lack of commitment and apathy among the people concerning sanitation at this time and age,'' adding that, the AMA had prosecuted a number of persons for various sanitation offences.

He enumerated some of government's policies and flagship programmes such as, planting for food and jobs, National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme, One-District-One Factory and Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Programmes, initiated by government to create jobs and alleviate poverty.

'It was for this reasons that the AMA attaches greater importance to the Town Hall Meeting to enable the people to demand accountability and updates on all development and sanitation projects,'' he said.

Mohammed Sowah said the Assembly would extend sewers to all areas and connect domestic and commercial sewage into the system, embark on a massive education on the proper usage of the system and encouraged households to support the initiative.

The Accra MCE said the Assembly would implement a mechanized and modernized revenue collection in 2018, saying that, ''let me use this opportunity to advice residents and the business community to honour their tax obligations''.

Mr Ishmael Ashitey, Greater Accra Regional Minister, who chaired the forum, said government would put in place an effective mechanism that would factor 'your concerns in the decision making process, regarding resource distribution and service delivery'.

'We wish to take this opportunity to encourage our members, social partners and other stakeholders that, through our collaborative efforts we should be able to support the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) towards the realization of set targets,'' he said.

Mr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, Minister of Information said government would reduce poverty, diseases and illiteracy by 2020.

On the free Senior High School (SHS), he said ''we are aware there was going to be a pressure on the facilities due to the admission of about 100,000 students into schools

'But the solution is not to run away from the problems but solve to it and urged all to disregard the lies being peddled about the policy.
