The Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has declared that the H1N1 Viral Influenza which has raised a national health alert has been contained.

He made the pronouncement when he visited the Kumasi Academy Senior High School (KUMACA) where the disease emanated and killed four students.

Dr Bawumia commended personnel of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), the management of KUMACA and the Education Service for helping to hold the fort and finding the cause of the disease which was earlier diagnosed wrongly to have been caused by an atypical bacteria.

He indicated that, “When the deaths happened, the health ministry, the education ministry and the Ghana Health Service together with the doctors have battled hard to find the cause. Now we know that it was H1N1 influenza and fortunately this disease is treatable”.

He added, “My report is that the disease has been contained even though we still need to be vigilant”.

Extending the condolence of the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Vice President indicated that a package of five thousand cedis (GHC5000) each had been allocated for families of the deceased to cater for their initial funeral expenses.

“The President has asked me to tell you that all the hospital expenses of the students and the funeral expenses of the bereaved families will be catered for by government. But in the interim, government understands that some of you have made some expenses already and government is giving you an initial amount of five thousand Ghana cedis each.”

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia also gave assurances that enough medications and vaccinations are being sought to ensure that students are treated and given the medical protection against contracting and dying from the disease.
