Over 25 participants have graduated from a one year adult literacy and economic empowerment programme organised by the Samuel Amo Tobbin (SAT) Foundation in Accra.

The adult students were given writing, reading and speaking skills in English Language to aid their communication skills. They were also taught governance and other health related courses to enhance their understanding of governance and the need to live healthy lives.

Mrs Millicent Akoto, Executive Director of the Foundation, addressing the participants at the maiden graduation ceremony, urged them to always communicate in the English Language to make them fluent.

She also urged them to use the skills they had acquired, such as beads making to earn a living for themselves and their families, especially those who had no means of earning income.

Mrs Akoto gave the assurance that the Foundation would support them in diverse forms to make them economically self-reliant.

Mrs Mary Tobbin Osei, Board Chairperson of the Foundation, noted that the Foundation had gained international recognition, which could yield positive results for many needy and vulnerable citizens.

She said the Founder, Mr Samuel Amo Tobbin, received the Humanitarian Icon of Africa Award last month at the fifth Global Officials of Dignity (G.O.D) awards.

Mrs Tobbin Osei noted that even though the programme was initially meant for deprived street children and children of head porters (Kayaye), the Foundation was amazed by the enthusiasm shown by adults who quit schooling in their early years, and those who did not have formal education.

Madam Joyce Bamfo, a graduant on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed their gratitude to the SAT Foundation for the immense support.

She said they were able to read and speak at least basic English Language; knew how the arms of government operated in the country as well as knowing basic important tips on health.

The event ended with exhibition and sales of the beads by the graduands.
