The Yendi Municipal Assembly has put good sanitary practices high on its development agenda to ensure clean and healthy environment for its people to live healthier lives.

It has therefore used a chunk of its internally generated funds to repair all the Assembly's broken down refuse disposal trucks for the clearing of heaped refuse and emptying the 24 public toilets in the Yendi Township.

Alhaji Hammed Abubakar Yussif, the Yendi Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) announced this in Yendi on Wednesday during the second phase of the Town Hall meeting, which is a collaborative programme between the Ministries of Information and Local Government and Rural Development.

Alhaji Yussif said, 'When I assumed office, my first challenge was sanitation and all the 24 public toilets, which were choked because the only septic emptier and the refuse disposal trucks were broken down had to be repaired immediately for clearing the mess'.

He said if people live healthier lives it was bound to bring development to their community and stressed the need and importance of using part of the Assembly's Internally Generated Funds (IGF) to ensure good sanitary practices in Yendi for healthier living.

He said prior to the repair of its broken down refuse disposal trucks, the Assembly had to rely on ZoomLion from Tamale and the West Mamprusi District Assembly to help dislodge public toilets in Yendi and announced that 15 artisans had also been trained in Yendi for the construction of household latrines,to reduce the problem of open defecation while a local NGO known as 'Samasama' was also providing household toilets at affordable prices.

Alhaji Yussif said sensitisation against open defecation was ongoing and he had personally visited over 100 communities and discussed the need for good sanitation practices.

On agriculture, Mr Yussif said a total of 600 farmers benefited from the government's 'Planting for food and jobs' programme and cultivated 6,185 acres of maize, 1,357.5 acres of rice and 385 acres of soya beans at a cost of GH¢ 285,625.30.

He said interventions had also been put in place to ensure that all promises the NPP government pledged to Ghanaians were achieved and various dams would be constructed to fulfil the 'one village, one dam' promise.

Other areas that would receive priority attention included education, water, health, energy and road sectors and assured that all inherited projects under the previous NDC government would be completed.

Mr Salifu Saeed, the Northern Regional Minister in speech read on his behalf appealed for total peace in Dagbon for the needed development and to attract more investors.
