Ghana is engulfed in lies and lying -Archbishop

Accra, July 16, GNA- The Archbishop of the Anglican Church, Reverend Justice Offei Akrofi on Saturday expressed displeasure about the culture of lies and falsehood that had engulfed the nation in recent times.

He said if the current ugly practice was not halted it was likely to spell the doom of the country saying, "a nation that peddles in lies is on a slippery path to disaster."

Speaking at the end of the eighteenth annual synod of the Anglican diocese of Accra, Archbishop Akrofi noted that the "nation is afflicted by lies and lying through political antics and as a result its reputation is being torn to shred, all in the want of power." The Synod is convocation of the representatives of various parishes within the Accra diocese to discuss the state and developments in the respective dioceses.

Archbishop Akrofi said stunt stories pasted on the Internet about government and other individuals had triggered series of questions from abroad.

"Our newspapers carry reports of lies and accusations, which challenged in court had proven to be falsehood," he added.

This practice gives the country a bad international outlook and that Ghanaians must demonstrate patriotism and high sense of decency in their day-to-day activities and cave a good image for the nation. He however, urged the politicians to desist from the peddling falsehood adding, " This is the only way ensuring peace, the building of harmonious society as well as foster national reconciliation."

Archbishop Akrofi also called on Christians to declare war on the culture of lies saying let the faithful from the housetop and in the basement teamed up to deal with this serious canker.

He observed that the church, as sociological reality, had become over politicized to its own detriment and said deep spirituality must be regulative of political life in the church.

Although politics is inevitable in any group's life, let us do it in such a way that the standard of Christ would be maintained. At the end of the three-day meeting, the Synod resolved that the church adopts HIV/AIDS and children education policy, all financial transaction go through the financial board and ensure gender balance in elections and discipline among members.
