The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has received $1 million in grant from the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA).

The University is expected to use the money to facilitate the training of students to support sustainable national, regional economic and social development.

The support is part of DANIDA’s Building Stronger Universities (BSU) for developing countries initiative and is a partnership between Danish universities and tertiary institutions in developing countries.

The overall objective of the programme, in its third phase, is to enhance the capacity of partners in providing scientific knowledge and research-based education for the advancement of society.

About 28 pilot projects are lined up in the current phase of the project, which started in October 2017 and expected to end in September 2021.

Emphasis will be laid on innovation, entrepreneurship, outreach and research support systems.

“As Danish universities, we bring on board general expertise, but will also bring specific expertise like smart-climate, agriculture, innovation and health-delivery systems,” said Dr. Torston Rodel Berg of the Department of Agro-ecology, the Aarhus University.

Social Professor and Head of Studies Department of Public Health at the Copenhagen University, said “We want to be better at crossing the walls between sectors and disciplines. This will increase relevance for society like joining agriculture and health with the perspective of innovation and entrepreneurship.”

Project Co-ordinator, Prof Clement Abaidoo, believes strides made in the first and second phases of the partnership will be consolidated.

Relevant themes would enable KNUST to facilitate achievement of Sustainable Development Goals and objectives of the Ghana National Climate Change Policy.
