29.11.2017 LISTEN

The Nkoranza South Municipal Office of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) is to set up anti-bushfire taskforce to arrest and prosecute fire offenders in the Municipality.

The taskforce would comprise representatives of the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service and NADMO, Mr Badu Frimpong-Manso, the Nkoranza South Coordinator of the Organisation, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Nkoranza.

He said his office has planned to launch a three month anti-bushfire campaign to sensitise the local communities on the causes and effects of bush fires.

Mr Frimpong-Manso expressed concern about the perennial bush fires in the Municipality, warning that offenders would not be spared.

He said the ban on group hunting was still in force and cautioned the youth in the area against such activities or face prosecution in Court.

Mr Frimpong-Manso commended the community fire volunteers for their commitment in combating fire outbreaks and appealed to them to intensify the campaign as the dry season sets in.

He urged religious leaders to use the pulpit to educate their congregation on the devastating consequences of bushfires to the nation. Mr Frimpong-Manso called on palm wine tappers and honey hunters to be mindful about the way they handle naked fires to avoid fire outbreaks and also urged cashew farmers in the area
