The contractor in charge of the 2nd phase of the 15 to 30.5kms Sandema, Doninga, Santijan road has abandoned constructions works on the road according to the Minister for Roads and Highways, Mr. Akwasi Amoako-Atta.

The Minister said this on the floor of Parliament House on Friday, 24th November 2015 when he was answering questions by the Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak on current work progress of the road network in both the Builsa South and North Districts of the Upper East Region.

The road project which commenced on the 3rd of November 2016 is expected to be completed by 2nd May 2018; however, the contractor in question has abandoned the project. Commenting on the current status of the road, the Minister said, “current status between Sandema – Doninga- Santijan road, covering the second part of the 15 and 30.5kms. The current status is that this project commenced on 3rd November 2016 for completion on 2nd May 2018. Physical progress is projected at 2% completion. The contractor is currently not at the site.”

He was quick to add that, the project which is being financed from the Ghana Road Fund, “has been recommended for termination to be rewarded”.

In an answer to a question asked by the Member of Parliament for the Builsa South Constituency, Dr. Clement Apaak on “when the construction of Sandema – Doninga – Santijan roads will be completed”, the Minister said construction of the said road was in twofold: “rehabilitation of the Sandema – Doninga - Santijan road which covers 15km; and rehabilitation of Sandema – Doninga- Santijan road which covers the second half between 15 and 30.5kms.”

“Thank you, Mr. Speaker! Mr. Speaker the Sandema – Doninga – Santijan road, which is located in the Builsa north district of the upper east region is 30.5kms long and ends at the ‘Sisili’ river. Santijan is beyond the ‘Sisili’ River. Most of the times, Santijan cannot be assessed from Doninga due to the absence of a bridge on the ‘Sisili’ river. Mr. Speaker, however, the ministry has had a program with DANIDA to construct six bridges in the Upper East and Upper West regions. One of which is to be constructed on the ‘Sisili’ River. Procurement for the construction of all the rivers including this particular one over the Sisili River is ongoing.”

He further said “Mr. Speaker, the current program covering this particular road is that two contracts have been awarded for the rehabilitation of the Sandema – Doninga - Santijan road which covers 15km; and rehabilitation of Sandema – Doninga- Santijan road which covers the second half between 15 and 30.5kms. And this covers the entire length of the Sandema – Doninga- Santijan road to the ‘Sisili’ River. The two projects when completed will have a gravel surface and bituminous surfacing in the town along the roads.”

According to Hon. Amoako-Atta, “dealing with the rehabilitation of Sandema – Doninga- Santijan road, a distance of 15kms. This project commenced on 3rd November 2016 for completion on 2nd May 2018. Physical project progress is projected at 5% completion.”

“The contractor is currently piling gravel material to use for the South, East, West. The project, once again, is being financed from the Ghana road fund.” He adds.
