Artisans Based At Cable & Wireless Oppose Ghana Post Eviction Order

The artisans at Cable and Wireless in Bubuashie a suburb of Accra are protesting plans by the Ghana Post Company to evict them.

The members of the National Artisans & Traders Union of Ghana (NATUG) want President Akufo-Addo to intervene in the situation.

The postal service has mounted eviction notice boards on the land occupied by scores of artisans with a deadline for them to leave.

But the workers today called a news conference urging the President to rather convert the area into an industrial village.

Addressing the media, the General Secretary of the Union, David Arthur, said the Chiefs in the area have given their support for the Cable and Wireless land to be turned into an industrial village.

“This is in fulfillment of government’s one district one factory policy promise,” he added.

According to him, they have been occupying the land for close to 25 years and until recently thought they were bonafide owners of the property.

But on September 4 this year, they sighted an advertisement in the Daily Graphic with the caption, “Removal of Squatters on unathorised structures and lands of Ghana Post at Bubuashie.”

Mr Arthur said that was when they realised their occupation of the land is being questioned.

Following the advertisement, NATUG made a passionate appeal to government to reconsider its decision to demolish the shops at the Cable & Wireless Park.

To the leadership of NATUG, the intended demolishing exercise will not only render the over 4,000 artisans with over 14, 000 apprentices jobless but will affect Abossey Okai Spare Parts dealers as well as the counterparts at Kokompe.

“Together with our apprentices, it will bring untold hardship on us and our dependents as well, as it will throw us out of business, which in the long run will worsen the unemployment situation in the country,” he added.

The artisans said they will not leave by the December 1 deadline and that they are waiting for the president’s intervention.

Ghana Post is yet to comment on the development.
