The President of the Association of Graduates in Skill Development popularly known as Unemployment Graduate Association of Ghana, has questioned the sustainability of the President special initiative dubbed ‘Nations Builder Corps’ initiative which would employ 100,000 unemployed graduates under the programme.

Mr. Desmond Bress Biney indicated that he is not convinced of the job security of these unemployed graduates judging from how the policy is going to be implemented as said by the finance minister.

The president of the association disclosed this in an interview on Space FM Morning Flight show hosted by Dickson Smith.

According to him, even though the policy when implemented would reduce the burden of unemployment in Ghana, its implementation has raised eyebrow.

Mr. Bress Biney therefore stressed the need for government to make the guideline policy documents available to the public to clear any doubts about its the implementation.

The Finance Minister Hon. Ken Ofori Atta told parliament that the programme falls under the supervision of the office of the president, but the unemployed graduates boss believes if the programme is supervised by the president, it could breed corruption instead of opportunities.

He therefore, recommended to the government to strengthen the Youth Employment Agency to absorb the Nations Builder Corps as one of its modules to ensure sustainability.

He expressed worry that most often politicians initiate policies only to reduce ‘political pressure’ which does not guarantee job security for the youth.

He however, commended the government for the introduction of One District- One Factory policy which would provide enough jobs for the youth of the country.

He therefore urged the government to hasten the implementation of the 1D1F programme.

Mr. Biney called on the government agencies and departments to heed to the demands of the association because “the huge unemployment rate is a security threat to the country”. He underscored the importance of the government to always engage the association for inputs in addressing the unemployment situation in the country.
