Kumasi, July 11, GNA - The Ghana Health Service (GHS) is designing a public education programme to raise client awareness of services offered by the different facilities for implementation. The Service is also developing a standard referral form that will contain all the necessary information that needs to accompany a referred client or patient for use.

These were announced by Dr Joseph Bonney, Ashanti Regional Coordinator for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in Kumasi at the close of a two-day training of trainers workshop at the weekend organised by the GHS for care providers. The 40 participants were drawn from the various government hospitals in the region and were taken through the overview and concept of the scheme, types of schemes, organizational design and scheme, administration, role of the provider and guidelines for managing patients' records.

Dr Bonney entreated health care service providers to exhibit the highest professional standard and work according to the ethics of their profession.

He told them that under the NHIS, insured as well as uninsured clients could sue the service providers or health facility if there was negligence or misconduct on the part of the providers in the health delivery.

Dr Bonney therefore advised the participants to be familiar with the patient's charter, code of ethics and code of discipline so as to be abreast with their responsibilities under the scheme. 11 July 05
