Accra, Oct. 27, (Yonhap/GNA) - The top diplomats of South Korea and Canada discussed cooperation in dealing with North Korea's nuclear problem and other issues of mutual concern on Friday, the foreign ministry said.

Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha spoke by phone with her Canadian counterpart Chrystia Freeland, according to the ministry.

They discussed cooperation against the threats from the North's nuclear and missile programs and, in particular, agreed to work together to stably manage the security situation on the Korean Peninsula and peacefully resolve the current stalemate, the ministry said.

Kang also asked for Canada's active support for and participation in the upcoming Winter Olympics in a way that could serve as a chance to boost momentum for inter-Korean exchanges and cooperation aimed at easing tensions in the region.

Freeland promised to provide support for South Korea to make the Olympics to be held in Pyeong Chang early next year a success, the ministry said.
