Pokuase-Amasaman Appeal For Zebra Crossing

Residents of Pokuase and Amasaman in the Ga West District have appealed to the Ghana Highway Authority to as a matter of urgency site zebra-crossing points at strategic locations on the main Accra-Kumasi highway passing through the area.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Wednesday, Mr Emmanuel Teye a resident of Festus, near Pokuase said the absence of road marks specifically zebra-crossing had exposed residents to danger 'as we have to navigate through speeding vehicles on the dual carriage road from one side to the other.

Mr Teye noted that because there are no zebra-crossings, most drivers failed to slow down or even stop for pedestrians, and particularly expressed worry about pupils who cross the busy road daily to and from school.

Ms Rebecca Ansah, a student also explained to the GNA the ordeal residents along both sides of the dual carriage endure to cross highway either to catch a bus at the other side to school, work and even to town.

She noted that sometimes 'one have to stand at the edge of the road for over 30 minutes just to cross the road. I believe if there are zebra-crossing points, some good drivers would respect the rules and stop for pedestrians to cross'.

Mr John Owusu, a trader, said crossing the highway was difficult because most drivers on the Pokuase-Amasaman road are always speeding and if care is not taken pedestrians could be knocked down.

He urged the engineers of the road to revisit the road plan.

Mrs Beatrice Agyemang, a business woman, told the GNA that she had to aid her kids to cross the road daily, a task she described as risky due to the absence of road marks on the streets.

'We are appealing to the authorities to consult opinion leaders, the assembly members and chiefs from communities along the highway to site zebra-crossings to save us from danger'.
